TERN WINS DOWNEAST RACEWEEK XV
Aug 7-9 - After the three most beautful days of the summer, racing on scenic Blue Hill and Jericho Bays in a recent record fleet of 26 boats, Northeast Harbor Fleet Commodore, Bob Johnstone sailing his J/100 TERN with finishes of 5,3,1 was declared overall winner to earn “The Max” Warburg Trophy,. the Morris Trophy for Division II, the Paul Nevin Memorial Trophy for the best cumulative corrected time in fleet on Saturday and Sunday and the Arundel Plate for Division II in the August Cruise. Second overall for the Harry Wilmerding Tray was Marcus Heilner, in his Center Harbor 50 HOI-AN from the Kollegewidgwok YC. Third overall was Jeffrey Becton in ARIANA, his classic Ohlson 41 yawl, which won the Michael Crofoot Trophy for Division III and both the Constance Madeira Trophy and Arthur F. Chace, Jr. Trophy..
The Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club team of cruising class boats (HOI-AN, OTTER and ARIANA won the Yacht Club Challenge Trophy. KYC’s Atlantic Class won the first ever shoot out against the Northeast Harbor Fleet’s International One-Designs. Top boat for KYC ws Andrew Balwin sailing RED FISH. Top International for the Thomas S. Gates Trophy on Saturday was Dave Folger in TUNDRA with Sidney Rockefeller winning the August Cruise Series for the Edsel B. Ford Bowl.
RACE I of 17.2 miles on Friday, started at Ship & Barges Ledge in Blue Hill Bay then downwind in light air and a strong ebb tide to Bass Harbor. By heading across to MDI, David Rockefeller and Rick Burnes led the fleet. Just after most boats rounded the Bass Harbor C1, a stong line squall hit with 40 knots of wind, ripping jibs, forcing boats to sail under mainsail alone and causing general havoc. The boats struggled upwind to Pond Island Passage then to the finish in Pretty Marsh, where they rafted up for a beautiful evening of camaraderie. Hal Kroeger’s Morris 52 FAR OUT was the overall winner of this race and by taking a 5th in the final race, won the Lewis K. Cherot Memorial Trophy for the best 2 race score in Division 1.
RACE 2 of 19.5 miles started in Pretty Marsh in a good northwesterly which gradually shifted into the west. The race was throught the Casco Passage down Jericho Bay and then a beat back into Southeast Harbor. The smaller boats had their day with ARIANA, OTTER and TERN finishing in the money.
RACE 3 Going into the last day, there were 3 boats tied with 8 points (HOI-AN, FAR OUT and TERN) with ARIAN sitting with 9 Points and a win. So, the winner of this last race would take it all. The race was 20.2 miles out of Southeeast Harbor, up past Green Island and Pond Island Passage, around Folly Island south of Pretty March then to the finish at Ship & Barges. TERN got off the starting line with the big boats then fell into a hole, allowing OTTER and BREAKAWAY to move out into a 1 mile lead just behind HOI AN, CYBELE and BARRA. Eventually TERN closed the gap with a building southerly, then played the western shore and slipped in behind HOI ANN to take share the lead... which they did, finishing 3rd, boat for boat, behind HOI-AN and CYBELE, to save their time, win the day and the overall trophy.
TERN’s 3 person crew on the last two days were Bob Johnstone, son Drake Johnstone of Charlottesville VA and Andrew Kennedy of Washington DC. Son Stuart and Julia _____________ from Newport RI sailed on the first day.

DOWNEAST RACEWEEKEND XV INVITATION 2009
August 7-9, 2009
The Northeast Harbor Fleet and Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club of Blue Hill cordially invite you to participate in the 15th Annual Downeast RaceWeek, an event that in 2009 becomes a long “Weekend” from Friday, August 7th to Sunday, August 9th. Racing will be in picturesque Blue Hill and Jericho Bays with magnificent views of Mt. Desert as a backdrop.
A significant addition to this classic CRUISING CLASS event will be participation by two one design classes, Atlantics and International One Designs. This reflects this year’s return to the traditional roots of DERW and its focus on participation and fun racing. This format will also make it easier to sign up crew who work during the week and for club one-design participation.
Cruising/Racing Class This event combine the KYC Nevin Cup and NEHF August Cruise. The Nevin Cup will still feature the best adjusted combined times for the two races on Saturday and Sunday. The August Cruise will be scored on all three days of racing, Friday through Sunday using the Low Point Scoring System. All boats will start together, but for scoring purposes, the boats will be divided into 3 or 4 Divisions. There are prizes for overall Winners. Monohull cruiser/racer sailboats of at least 22 feet LOA with PHRFNE 2009 ratings are eligible as are Atlantic Class, 6 Meter and International One-Designs. Large crusing boats, both power and sail, are invited to particpate as sponsoriing motherships for a one-design entry.
Two new trophies are being introduced:
Downeast Yacht Club Challenge Trophy – This is similar to the Bermuda Race Onion Patch Trophy. A yacht club may enter one or more 3-4 boat teams (CCA, NYYC, NEHF, DHYC, KYC, etc.). The top 3 boats of the team are scored in each race. The Yacht Club Team with the best point score over 3 races will become the winner.
International One-Design vs. Atlantic Class Shoot Out - These two classes have never raced against one another ,head-to-head. This new trophy will settle which is the top boat. PHRFNE rates the two designs equally at 150secs/m so they can start them together on a level playing field. Saturday's races will see which one-design class comes out on top. On Sunday, an effort will be made to create a course doe 2nd race with a common interim finish mark as each class races for home.
2009 SCHEDULE
Friday, August 7 1200 Hours – All boats rendezvous at Ships & Barges Ledge, with IOD’s being towed out if necessary. All boats finish this day in the vicinity of Pretty Marsh Harbor on Mt. Desert Island for a raft up party.
